New Year's Resolutions

Does anyone else feel like the start of 2018 was just a couple months ago? I swear the years are going by faster and faster and I don't think I'm very happy about it.  Nonetheless, the month leading up to the New Year is one of my favorite times of the year, not only because of the holidays, but because I get so excited and motivated for the year ahead.

I know some of you out there aren't big fans of the whole New Year's resolution idea. (Why do you need a specific day to better yourself?) Still, I LOVE the idea of New Year's resolutions.  They help me to set deadlines, get motivated, and measure my goals.  This year is no exception.  The following are a few of my resolutions for 2019.  What are yours?

1. Eat Better and Be Active I know this one is pretty standard but it's important to me.  I want to make an effort to make my body feel better internally.  When I say "eat better" I don't necessarily mean eat healthier.  I wish I could, but I know that that's just not going to happen.  I mean, I LOVE pasta and will never give it up.  But what I mean is I need to eat less and within reason.  A lot of the times I continue to eat if there is food on my plate, even if I'm completely stuffed to the point where I get extremely uncomfortable.  I also have a bad habit of ordering too many courses when I go out to eat or snacking too much when I'm home. (See a pattern here?)  I want to make a reasonable effort to only eat when I'm hungry and to drink a glass of water before I start to eat.  I think it will help me to not only feel better, but save money as well!  I've also realized that reaching that lofty goal of eight glasses of water per day just sounds like too much.  Let's start with six. Six sounds good.

Throughout my entire life I've been in and out of workout routines.  Having been a gymnast when I was younger, I used to work out religiously.  That habit comes back now and then in my adult life but I want to get into a solid routine.  No more excuses about being too busy, too lazy, too tired.  I'd like to be active at least five times a week.  This doesn't necessarily mean going to the gym every time, though I intend to get there more.  Maybe I'll go for a long walk or run, go ice skating with my friends or take a yoga class. Thankfully I got a lot of hot yoga for Christmas! This resolution is more to keep my anxiety under control than to lose weight or get fit. When I work out, I'm generally happier and less stressed!

2. Care More About My Appearance I hate to say that more often than not, I look kind of a mess when I leave the house.  I want to put more care into my appearance because I think I will not only feel better physically, I think I'll have more confidence in my day-to-day activities.  I want to make a conscious effort to always have my hair and nails done, wear a well thought out outfit, and actually put makeup on every day before I leave the house.  (A crazy idea I know.) I also want to create a skincare routine as I think any late 20-something woman should be planning ahead if you know what I mean!

3. Sober January So for the last of my personal/health-related resolutions, I've decided to not drink for 30 days in January. Last summer I took a few weeks off from drinking and I was amazed at how much better I felt!  I literally never got bloated, my complexion looked healthier, and I had less anxiety.  Unfortunately, I live in Newport and summer is a constant string of barbeques and social gatherings so I did cave after three weeks, but I feel like January is a great time to take a drinking break again and start the new year off right.

4. Launch DPD I can't go into too much detail on this one yet but I've been working on a project for the last couple of months. It's been difficult to put aside my need for perfection to actually move forward with an idea, without worrying about the possibility of failure, but it seems like it's finally happening.  I couldn't be more excited! More on this in February.

5. Shop Devon MacKenzie For years now, I've wanted to open an online (and ideally down the road brick and mortar) store. I even went so far as to create a business 5-6 years ago, purchase a bunch of inventory, and not launch the site because I was not happy with my photography skills and didn't have the money to hire a photographer. Well, I'm back at it again but with a different mindset. Over the last few months, I've been picking up inventory here and there and am slowly moving towards opening a shop. I'm trying to go into it with a different attitude...something that is more of a hobby for me, than the next One Kings Lane. I have so much going on, that this isn't necessarily a top priority but my resolution is to keep inventory top of mind when I'm out and about and when I do have enough over time, to launch the site. It doesn't need to be perfect. I just needs to happen.

Well that's it for me! I would love to hear some of your resolutions as well. If you're going out tonight, I hope you all have a safe and fun night with family and friends.  Happy 2019!
